To understand why the largest shopping centre in eastern Slovakia sits on this particular road, you have to look at what the road leads to. In the 1960s the state built an enormous integrated ironworks at Šaca, on the flat ground south-west of Košice, and the city was rebuilt around it. Košice more than tripled in population between the early 1950s and the end of the communist period, and the new arrivals were housed in the vast panel-block districts that still ring the centre — Terasa on the plateau, Nad jazerom by the lake, KVP, Ťahanovce, and Juh, the southern borough this centre stands in.Aby ste pochopili, prečo najväčšie nákupné centrum východného Slovenska stojí práve na tejto ceste, musíte sa pozrieť, kam tá cesta vedie. Moldavská cesta is the artery that serves all of that. It is the road out to Moldava nad Bodvou that gives it its name, the corridor the works' shift traffic moves along, and the line the city's fast tram follows on its way to the plant gates. Put a shopping centre on it and you are not on the edge of anything — you are astride the daily movement of a hundred thousand people.Moldavská cesta je tepnou, ktorá to všetko obsluhuje. Optima opened here in 2002. Slovakia was then in the middle of its first true retail boom, and the pattern was the same everywhere: a single-storey-plus box on cheap land at a junction, a hypermarket at one end, a cinema on top and an ocean of surface parking. What made this one different was simply scale — it was built big, in a city of a quarter of a million with no comparable competitor for a hundred kilometres in any direction, and that combination has kept it the largest centre in eastern Slovakia ever since.Optima tu otvorila v roku 2002. Táto sa odlišovala jednoducho mierkou — postavili ju veľkú, v štvrťmiliónovom meste, ktoré nemalo porovnateľnú konkurenciu na sto kilometrov v žiadnom smere, a práve táto kombinácia z nej dodnes robí najväčšie centrum na východnom Slovensku.
