Let us be honest about the immediate surroundings: this is a district of arterial roads, housing blocks and industry, and nobody comes to Košice to look at it. What makes the location interesting is where it points. Northward, the old town is about a kilometre away — close enough to walk in twenty minutes or to reach in a few stops on the tram, which is worth knowing if you find yourself out here with an afternoon spare. In the same southern borough stands the Steel Aréna, the city's ice-hockey hall, and Košice's airport lies on this side of the city too.Buďme k bezprostrednému okoliu úprimní: je to štvrť prieťahov, panelákov a priemyslu a nikto sa do Košíc nechodí pozerať na ňu. Zaujímavou robí túto polohu to, kam ukazuje. Na sever je staré mesto asi kilometer ďaleko — dosť blízko na dvadsaťminútovú prechádzku alebo pár zastávok električkou, čo je dobré vedieť, ak sa tu ocitnete s voľným popoludním. V tej istej južnej mestskej časti stojí Steel Aréna, mestský zimný štadión, a na tejto strane mesta je aj košické letisko.
Southward is where it gets good. Keep going along Moldavská cesta and the plain gives way to the Slovak Karst — one of the most remarkable limestone landscapes in Central Europe, and a UNESCO World Heritage site for its caves. Within an easy drive lie the Jasov Cave beneath its Premonstratensian monastery, the vertical white walls of the Zádiel gorge, and the wider network of show caves that runs on across the Hungarian border into the Aggtelek Karst. Ak budete po Moldavskej ceste pokračovať, rovina ustúpi Slovenskému krasu — jednej z najpozoruhodnejších vápencových krajín strednej Európy a lokalite svetového dedičstva UNESCO vďaka jaskyniam. Na krátku cestu autom sú odtiaľto Jasovská jaskyňa pod premonštrátskym kláštorom, kolmé biele steny Zádielskej tiesňavy a celá sieť sprístupnených jaskýň, ktorá pokračuje cez maďarskú hranicu do Aggtelekského krasu. Ak si v Košiciach požičiavate auto, práve táto cesta je dôvod.
And west of the road, on the flat land toward Šaca, stand the ironworks themselves — a horizon of stacks, gas holders and conveyor bridges that is genuinely part of the identity of this city, whatever you think of it as scenery. It is the single largest industrial plant in Slovakia, it is why the districts around you exist, and on a clear evening it is the most dramatic thing on the southern skyline.A na západ od cesty, na rovine smerom k Šaci, stoja samotné železiarne — obzor komínov, plynojemov a dopravníkových mostov, ktorý je naozaj súčasťou identity tohto mesta, nech si o ňom ako o scenérii myslíte čokoľvek. Je to najväčší priemyselný závod na Slovensku, je dôvodom, prečo sídliská okolo vás vôbec existujú, a za jasného večera je to najdramatickejšia vec na južnom obzore.
