The name comes from close to home. Madaras is the name of the town's own park on the edge of Spišská Nová Ves — the wooded recreation ground that also holds the town's small zoo, and a name every local has known since childhood. Calling the centre after it was a considerably better instinct than the usual invented Latinism, and it tells you what the building is trying to be: not an outpost of somewhere else, but the town's own.Názov pochádza zblízka. Madaras sa volá mestský park na okraji Spišskej Novej Vsi — zalesnený rekreačný areál, v ktorom je aj mestská zoologická záhrada, meno, ktoré každý domáci pozná od detstva. Pomenovať podľa neho centrum bol podstatne lepší nápad než obvyklý vymyslený latinizmus a hovorí to o tom, čím sa budova chce byť: nie výbežkom niečoho iného, ale mestskou záležitosťou.
Spišská Nová Ves is a town of around thirty-five thousand people, but the catchment it serves is far larger than that. It is the district town for a wide spread of Spiš villages, the railhead for visitors heading into Slovenský raj, and the practical base for the whole of the region's tourism. Madaras, on Mlynská street, opened in 2009 into that role, and is generally described as the largest shopping centre in Spiš. It is not competing with Košice or Poprad; it is doing the job that used to be done by the shops around the square, at a scale the square could no longer hold.Spišská Nová Ves má okolo tridsaťpäťtisíc obyvateľov, no jej spádové územie je oveľa väčšie. Je okresným mestom pre široké okolie spišských dedín, železničným nástupom pre návštevníkov Slovenského raja a praktickou základňou cestovného ruchu celého regiónu. Madaras na Mlynskej ulici sa do tejto úlohy otvoril v roku 2009 a bežne sa označuje za najväčšie nákupné centrum Spiša. Nekonkuruje Košiciam ani Popradu; robí prácu, ktorú kedysi zastali obchody okolo námestia, len v mierke, ktorú by námestie už neunieslo.
