Immediately around the centre is the district itself: the wide boulevard, the city hall across it, the ranks of housing blocks, and the university teaching hospital whose staff and visitors make up a good share of the weekday lunch trade. Turn the other way and something better happens. Terasa stops, and the Košice city forest begins — thousands of hectares of wooded hill running north and west above the city, laced with marked trails and cycle routes. In the Čermeľ valley a narrow-gauge children's railway has been running since 1956, worked seasonally by volunteers, climbing from Čermeľ to Alpinka through the trees. Above it lie Bankov, the ridge village of Kavečany with the city's zoo — one of the largest zoo sites in Europe by area — and Jahodná, the small ski and recreation area that gives Košice snow within half an hour of its own tram network.Ak sa otočíte na druhú stranu, stane sa niečo lepšie. V Čermeľskej doline premáva od roku 1956 úzkorozchodná detská železnica, ktorú sezónne prevádzkujú dobrovoľníci a ktorá stúpa lesom z Čermeľa na Alpinku. Nad ňou ležia Bankov, hrebeňová obec Kavečany s mestskou zoo — jedným z rozlohou najväčších zoologických areálov v Európe — a Jahodná, malé lyžiarske a rekreačné stredisko, vďaka ktorému majú Košice sneh do polhodiny od vlastnej električkovej siete.
A short way north of the plateau is the botanical garden of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, the largest in Slovakia, with glasshouses of cacti and subtropical collections. Between the garden, the forest and the railway, this side of Košice makes a genuinely good half-day — and none of it is what anyone expects of a district known for its housing blocks.Kúsok na sever od plošiny je botanická záhrada Univerzity Pavla Jozefa Šafárika, najväčšia na Slovensku, so skleníkmi kaktusov a subtropických zbierok.
