Cassovia belongs to the first generation of Slovak retail architecture, and it looks it. This is a low, wide, single-storey building with a flat roof and a straight internal street — no soaring atrium, no glazed drum, no roof garden. Daylight comes in at the ends and through rooflights rather than pouring down through a void. The interiors were substantially rebuilt in 2007, which enlarged and squared up the units, but the underlying character is unchanged: this is a shed done properly rather than a piece of architecture.Cassovia patrí k prvej generácii slovenskej maloobchodnej architektúry a aj tak vyzerá. Je to nízka, široká, prízemná budova s plochou strechou a rovnou vnútornou ulicou — žiadne vzdušné átrium, žiadny presklený valec, žiadna strešná záhrada. Denné svetlo prichádza z čiel a cez svetlíky, nie zhora cez priestor cez celú výšku. Interiéry v roku 2007 výrazne prestavali, čím sa prevádzky zväčšili a sceli, no základný charakter sa nezmenil: je to poctivo urobená hala, nie architektonické dielo.
What that buys is a kind of ease the newer centres cannot match. The car park is at grade, in the open, and generous — you drive in, you park close to the door, you carry things out to the car without a lift or a ramp. For a household buying flat-pack furniture, a mattress, garden things or sports kit, that arrangement is worth more than any amount of polished stone.
The site around it has grown into the second half of the story. Large-format stores were added over the years on the same ground, so what you actually visit is not one building but a cluster: the original centre with its supermarket and mall, and separate big-box units for furniture, kitchens, bathrooms and sport standing around a shared apron. Walking between them is a matter of crossing car-park aisles rather than concourses, which is either honest or bleak depending on the weather.Areál okolo neho vyrástol do druhej polovice príbehu. Na tom istom pozemku pribudli v priebehu rokov veľkoplošné predajne, takže to, čo navštívite, nie je jedna budova, ale zoskupenie: pôvodné centrum so supermarketom a pasážou a samostatné haly s nábytkom, kuchyňami, kúpeľňami a športom rozostavané okolo spoločnej plochy. Prechod medzi nimi znamená prekračovať uličky parkoviska, nie pasáže, čo je podľa počasia buď úprimné, alebo pochmúrne.
