The River and the LakeRieka a jazero
The honest summary of the immediate neighbourhood is that it is a working southern district — housing blocks, workshops, arterial roads — and that nothing within sight of the car park is a sight. But the Juh borough has two genuinely good things in it, and both are about water.Úprimné zhrnutie najbližšieho okolia znie, že ide o pracovitú južnú štvrť — paneláky, dielne, prieťahy — a že nič, čo z parkoviska vidno, nie je pamiatka. Mestská časť Juh však má dve naozaj dobré veci a obe sú o vode.
The first is the Hornád, the river that Košice is built along. A cycle and walking path follows the embankment for most of the length of the city, from the northern districts down past the centre and out through the south, and it is by some distance the pleasantest way to travel across Košice under your own power — flat, green, largely traffic-free, and close enough to this side of town to be worth an afternoon. The second is Jazero, the lake that gave the eastern district Nad jazerom its name: a former gravel working now used for swimming, paddling and summer evenings, with the housing blocks standing back from the water.Prvou je Hornád, rieka, pozdĺž ktorej sú Košice postavené. Po hrádzi vedie cyklistický a peší chodník takmer celou dĺžkou mesta, zo severných štvrtí popri centre a von cez juh, a je to zďaleka najpríjemnejší spôsob, ako sa Košicami presunúť vlastnou silou — rovinatý, zelený, prevažne bez áut a dosť blízko k tejto strane mesta na to, aby stál za popoludnie. Druhou je Jazero, vodná plocha, ktorá dala meno východnej štvrti Nad jazerom: bývalá štrkovňa, dnes využívaná na kúpanie, pádlovanie a letné večery, s panelákmi stojacimi v úctivom odstupe od vody.
Otherwise, the useful things nearby are practical rather than scenic. The Steel Aréna, home of the city's ice hockey, stands in the same borough; the airport lies to the south; and the old town, with the cathedral and the whole length of Hlavná, is a couple of kilometres north — close enough that the sensible plan is to do whatever bulky errand brought you here and then go into the centre for the afternoon.Inak sú užitočné veci v okolí skôr praktické než malebné. V tej istej mestskej časti stojí Steel Aréna, domov košického hokeja; na juhu leží letisko; a staré mesto s dómom a celou dĺžkou Hlavnej je pár kilometrov na sever — dosť blízko na to, aby rozumný plán znel: vybaviť objemný nákup, pre ktorý ste sem prišli, a potom sa presunúť na popoludnie do centra.
