Start at the manor. It reads as a Renaissance building from outside — squat, four-square, turreted at the corners, with the ornamental attic band that Spiš builders liked — and as an eighteenth-century one inside, where the rococo remodelling did its work. The rooms hold an exhibition of historic furniture, arranged period by period, so the visit doubles as a walk through changing taste: heavy Renaissance chests, baroque and rococo cabinets, the lighter Empire and Biedermeier pieces, and on into the nineteenth century.
Then you leave by the garden side and walk down. The ground drops away in terraces — this was a formal garden in the French manner, with steps, a basin and clipped planting — and at the bottom of it stands the Dardanely. It is small, and it is meant to be: a one-storey pavilion with a curved roof and a pillared front, the sort of building put up so that a family could take coffee somewhere other than the house.Potom vyjdete na záhradnú stranu a idete dolu. Terén klesá terasami — bola to francúzsky komponovaná záhrada so schodmi, bazénom a strihanou zeleňou — a na jej konci stoja Dardanely. Sú malé a majú byť: prízemný letohrádok so zaoblenou strechou a stĺpovým priečelím, presne taká stavba, akú si postavíte, aby ste si mohli dať kávu niekde inde než v dome.
Inside is what makes the walk worth taking: a collection of historic keyboard instruments — spinets, clavichords, harpsichords, chamber organs, early square and grand pianos — filling rooms designed for exactly this scale of music. On the right day the pavilion is used for concerts, and hearing one of these instruments in the room it was built for is a different experience from seeing it behind glass.
