There are two honest ways up and both are on foot. The first is the flight of steps that climbs from the Danube embankment — short, steep, and the one that makes you feel the height of the rock. The second is the lane that leaves the old town past St Martin’s Cathedral and works its way round the hill to the Sigismund Gate, the medieval gateway on the town side; it is longer, gentler and far more interesting, because you arrive through a gate rather than at a car park.Hore vedú dve poctivé cesty a obe pešo. Once inside, walk the ramparts first. The terraces run right round the block, and the whole point of the castle — that it watches a river crossing — only makes sense from up there. On the town side is the honorary courtyard, an open forecourt with an equestrian statue facing the city; below and beyond it the roofs of the old town begin, and to the east the low modern block of the Slovak National Council, the country’s parliament, sits on the same hilltop as its near neighbour.Keď ste vnútri, prejdite najprv hradby. Through the arch into the main courtyard: a large paved square, plain and hard-edged, with the mouth of a very deep well set into it — the thing that let a garrison hold out on a waterless rock. From here the Crown Tower can be climbed, and it is worth the stairs; it gives you the best view on the hill. The museum floors then take you inward and upward through the reconstructed state rooms. Come back out and finish on the northern side, in the Baroque garden — geometric parterres, clipped hedges and fountains, laid out again in recent years on the historical plan — and then take the southern terrace at dusk, when the walls light up over the river.Cez bránu na hlavné nádvorie: veľké dláždené priestranstvo, strohé a tvrdo ohraničené, s ústím veľmi hlbokej studne — práve vďaka nej mohla posádka vydržať na bezvodej skale. Odtiaľto sa dá vystúpiť na Korunnú vežu a tie schody za to stoja; je z nej najlepší výhľad na celom kopci. Múzejné podlažia vás potom vedú dovnútra a nahor cez obnovené reprezentačné sály. Vyjdite von a zakončite to na severnej strane, v barokovej záhrade — geometrické parterre, strihané živé ploty a fontány, obnovené v posledných rokoch podľa historického plánu — a potom si nechajte južnú terasu na súmrak, keď sa múry nad riekou rozsvietia.
