In 1811 the castle burned. The story repeated in Bratislava blames the soldiers billeted in the palace at the time, and it may well be right, but the cause is not the part that matters. What matters is the outcome: the roofs went, the interiors went, and the great white residence became a hollow shell of scorched wall standing on the most conspicuous rock in the city.V roku 1811 hrad vyhorel. It stayed that way for well over a century. Whole generations of Bratislavans were born, grew up and died knowing the castle only as a burnt ruin above their roofs — the shape on their horizon was an empty rectangle with the sky showing through the window holes. Stone was taken from it. Proposals to clear it away entirely were made. And yet the city went on drawing it, painting it and printing it, because a ruin on that rock was still, unmistakably, the emblem of the place.Tak to zostalo vyše storočia. Celé generácie Bratislavčanov sa narodili, vyrástli a zomreli, poznajúc hrad iba ako vyhorenú zrúcaninu nad svojimi strechami — tvar na ich obzore bol prázdny obdĺžnik, ktorým bolo cez okenné otvory vidieť oblohu. Kameň sa z neho odvážal. Objavovali sa aj návrhy odstrániť ho úplne. A mesto ho aj tak neprestalo kresliť, maľovať a tlačiť, pretože zrúcanina na tej skale bola aj naďalej nezameniteľným znakom tohto miesta.

Reconstruction began in the 1950s and the rebuilt castle reopened during the 1960s, restored to its eighteenth-century form. It was an enormous undertaking and, at the time, an act of national self-assertion as much as of conservation: the country was giving itself back its own emblem, whitewashed and roofed. That is why it is worth saying plainly what the building is. Most of what you touch up here is twentieth-century work over medieval foundations — and the fact that Bratislava chose to rebuild rather than to keep a picturesque ruin is one of the most revealing things the city has ever said about itself.Obnova sa začala v päťdesiatych rokoch dvadsiateho storočia a prestavaný hrad sa v priebehu šesťdesiatych rokov otvoril verejnosti, obnovený do podoby z osemnásteho storočia. Bol to obrovský podnik a v tom čase rovnako akt národného sebauvedomenia ako pamiatkovej ochrany: krajina si vracala vlastný symbol, obielený a zastrešený. Práve preto sa oplatí povedať na rovinu, čím tá stavba je. Väčšina toho, čoho sa tu hore dotknete, je práca dvadsiateho storočia na stredovekých základoch — a to, že sa Bratislava rozhodla stavať nanovo namiesto toho, aby si ponechala malebnú zrúcaninu, patrí k najvýrečnejším veciam, aké o sebe kedy povedala.
