The Rock, the Kingdom and the FireSkala, kráľovstvo a požiar

The hill was worth holding long before anyone wrote about it. A Celtic oppidum stood here in the last centuries BC; the Boii struck silver coins on this rock, the biatec issues whose design was later borrowed for Slovakia’s own coinage. Roman-period material has come out of the same ground, and on the summit archaeologists excavated the foundations of a stone church of the Great Moravian period. Some of that excavated fabric is presented in an underground exhibition beneath the courtyard — what is on show at any given time depends on the museum’s current programme, so check before you count on it. The name itself first appears as Brezalauspurc in a chronicle entry for 907, written in connection with the battle fought near here.

A stone castle stood here from the eleventh century, part of the young Kingdom of Hungary’s western defences. In the early fifteenth century Sigismund of Luxembourg rebuilt it as a great Gothic fortress — a frontier stronghold facing the Hussite wars, and the shape from which everything later grew. Its south-western tower, the Crown Tower, is the oldest part still standing, and it earned its name honestly: from the middle of the sixteenth century until the late eighteenth, the Hungarian crown jewels were kept in it, while Pressburg — today’s Bratislava — served as the coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary. The coronations themselves took place down in the town, in St Martin’s Cathedral, not up here; the castle held the regalia, the cathedral crowned the kings.

Renaissance remodelling squared the fortress off; the Baroque finished the job. Under Maria Theresa the castle became a proper court residence, and her son-in-law Albert of Saxe-Teschen lived here as governor. The drawings and prints he assembled during those years became the founding core of the Albertina in Vienna — one of the great graphic-art collections in Europe began its life on this hill. Then, in 1811, fire gutted the whole complex, and it stood a blackened shell for well over a century. Reconstruction began in the 1950s and the restored castle reopened during the 1960s. What you walk through today is therefore, in large part, a twentieth-century reconstruction of the eighteenth-century form — and that is part of the story rather than a flaw in it.Renesančná prestavba pevnosť zarovnala do pravidelného tvaru, barok dielo dokončil.
