On 11 December 1993, at UNESCO's seventeenth session, Vlkolínec was inscribed on the World Heritage list — in the same year as Banská Štiavnica and the Spiš Castle group, Slovakia's first three sites, and in the first year of the independent Slovak Republic. What was listed is not a building but a whole settlement: forty-five log homesteads with their plots, fences, lanes and hay meadows in the relationship they have always had. About twenty people live here permanently, and the yards are theirs. That is the condition of the listing and the reason the place is worth the walk up.11. decembra 1993 na sedemnástom zasadnutí UNESCO zapísali Vlkolínec do zoznamu svetového dedičstva — v tom istom roku ako Banskú Štiavnicu a Spišský hrad s okolím, teda medzi prvé tri slovenské lokality, a hneď v prvom roku samostatnej Slovenskej republiky. Zapísaná nebola stavba, ale celá osada: štyridsaťpäť zrubových usadlostí s parcelami, plotmi, uličkou a lúkami vo vzťahu, aký mali odjakživa. Trvale tu býva asi dvadsať ľudí a dvory patria im. To je podmienka zápisu — a zároveň dôvod, prečo sa oplatí vyjsť sem hore.
