In 1770 the villagers built a wooden bell tower in the middle of the single lane, a log structure on a rectangular plan. It is the most photographed thing in Vlkolínec now, but it was not built to be looked at. In a village of timber houses with open hearths, a bell is a fire alarm, and it also marked deaths, called people in from the fields and warned of weather. There was no church here yet, so for another century this was the village's one public building.V roku 1770 postavili obyvatelia uprostred jedinej ulice drevenú zvonicu, zrubovú stavbu na obdĺžnikovom pôdoryse. Dnes je najfotografovanejšou vecou vo Vlkolínci, no nestavali ju na pozeranie. V dedine z dreva a s otvorenými ohniskami je zvon požiarnym poplachom; okrem toho oznamoval úmrtia, volal ľudí z poľa a varoval pred počasím. Kostol tu vtedy ešte nestál, takže ďalšie storočie to bola jediná verejná budova obce.
