Cross the ring boulevard and walk in, and within a few minutes you are under the arcades of Mariánske námestie, a square enclosed on all four sides by continuous covered walkways and one of the finest of its kind in Slovakia. Below it, on the larger Námestie Andreja Hlinku, stand the Church of the Holy Trinity and the free-standing Renaissance Burian Tower. Not far off is the Rosenfeld Palace, an eccentric little turn-of-the-century villa that the city uses for exhibitions. Somewhere in the middle of all this is Park Ľudovíta Štúra, where the statue from this site now stands.Prejdite cez okruh a vojdite dnu — do pár minút stojíte pod podlubiami Mariánskeho námestia, priestranstva zovretého zo všetkých štyroch strán súvislými krytými chodbami a jedného z najkrajších svojho druhu na Slovensku. Pod ním, na väčšom Námestí Andreja Hlinku, stoja Kostol Najsvätejšej Trojice a samostatne stojaca renesančná Burianova veža. Neďaleko je Rosenfeldov palác, výstredná vilka z prelomu storočí, ktorú mesto využíva na výstavy. A niekde uprostred toho všetkého je Park Ľudovíta Štúra, kde dnes stojí socha z tohto miesta.
Beyond the city, Žilina is a junction of rivers and valleys. On the northern edge, where the Kysuca joins the Váh, sits Budatín Castle and its regional museum, keeper of the country's best-known collection of tinkers' wirework. Eastward the Váh narrows into a gorge watched by Strečno from one bank and the ruin of Starhrad from the other; southward, above the Rajčianka, the vast ruin of Lietava runs along its ridge. Past the gorge the road opens into the Malá Fatra — Vrátna, Terchová, Rozsutec — and in winter into the ski areas above them.Za mestom je Žilina uzlom riek a dolín. Na severnom okraji, tam, kde sa Kysuca vlieva do Váhu, stojí Budatínsky zámok a v ňom krajské múzeum, strážca najznámejšej zbierky drotárskych prác v krajine. Na východe sa Váh zužuje do tiesňavy, ktorú z jedného brehu sleduje Strečno a z druhého zrúcanina Starhradu; na juh, nad Rajčiankou, sa po hrebeni tiahne rozsiahla zrúcanina Lietavy. Za tiesňavou sa cesta otvára do Malej Fatry — Vrátna, Terchová, Rozsutec — a v zime k lyžiarskym strediskám nad nimi.
