You come to Budatín through its park. An English-style landscape park spreads around the castle along both rivers — mature broadleaf trees, open lawn, gravel paths that wander rather than aim — and it is free, open, and used by half of Žilina on a Sunday afternoon. The castle appears among the trees rather than above them: this is not a clifftop fortress you climb to but a walled house on flat ground beside the water, and the walk in is level the whole way.
Inside the walls, six centuries are easy to read: a courtyard, ranges of rooms rebuilt in one style over another, and at the heart of it the round tower, unmistakable and far older than anything touching it. The tower can be climbed, and from the top the geography that made the castle finally makes sense — the Kysuca coming in from the north, the Váh swinging past below, the ridges of the Malá Fatra standing away to the east and the Kysuce hills rolling off behind you. It is the best five minutes of the visit.
And then there is the wire. Budatín is the seat of the Považie Museum, and the museum’s great subject is drotárstvo — tinker wire craft, the trade this corner of Slovakia sent out into the world. From the late eighteenth century and right through the nineteenth, men from the poor mountain villages of the Kysuce and the upper Váh valley left home on foot as drotári, itinerant tinkers, with a coil of wire on their backs and a pair of pliers in their hands.
What they did first was mend. A cracked earthenware pot was not thrown away: a drotár bound it in a close mesh of wire and it went back on the stove. From mending they moved to making — wire baskets, sieves, whisks, mousetraps, racks and household goods of every kind. And they walked. They covered enormous circuits across the Habsburg lands and far beyond them, into Germany, into Russia, and eventually across the Atlantic, some of them settling and opening workshops in the cities they reached. It was a genuine emigrant industry, born of poor soil and too many mouths at the table. A chodili.
In time the craft outgrew its own usefulness. Wire stopped being a repair and became a medium: figures, vessels, reliefs and full wire sculptures made of nothing but bent and bound wire, by artists who still work in the tradition today. Budatín holds the largest museum collection in the world devoted to this craft — nearly 7,700 pieces — and that, more than the tower and more than the park, is the reason to make the trip.Časom remeslo prerástlo vlastnú užitočnosť. Drôt prestal byť opravou a stal sa výtvarným materiálom: figúry, nádoby, reliéfy a celé drôtené sochy zhotovené len z ohýbaného a viazaného drôtu, od autorov, ktorí v tejto tradícii tvoria dodnes. Budatín uchováva najväčšiu múzejnú zbierku na svete venovanú tomuto remeslu — takmer 7 700 predmetov — a práve to, viac než veža a viac než park, je dôvod, prečo sem prísť.
