A Castle Built to CollectHrad postavený na výber mýta
Budatín was founded in the second half of the thirteenth century, and it was founded for money as much as for war. It stands in a natural gate: the Váh comes down out of the mountains, the Kysuca joins it here, and the trade road running up the Váh valley toward Silesia and Poland had to pass this exact point. Whoever held the confluence held the crossing, and whoever held the crossing collected the toll. Budatín was a customs castle — a fortress with an accountant’s purpose.Budatín vznikol v druhej polovici trinásteho storočia a vznikol rovnako pre peniaze ako pre vojnu. Stojí v prirodzenej bráne: Váh schádza z hôr, vlieva sa doň Kysuca a obchodná cesta stúpajúca údolím Váhu k Sliezsku a Poľsku musela prejsť práve týmto miestom. Kto držal sútok, držal aj brod; a kto držal brod, vyberal mýto. Budatín bol colným hradom — pevnosťou s účtovníckym poslaním.
Its oldest part is still its most striking one: a massive round Romanesque tower, a cylindrical keep with walls thick enough to survive everything that later happened around it. Every other building at Budatín was raised against that tower over the following six centuries. The castle was held for generations by the Suňog family — Szunyogh in the Hungarian records — and later passed to the Čáky family, the Csákys, who shaped much of what a visitor sees today.
The rest of the story is written in styles laid one over another. Gothic building work enlarged the medieval castle; Renaissance walls and bastions went up when Ottoman raiding and the Hungarian uprisings made the Váh valley a dangerous place; the Baroque turned a fortress into a residence; and a Romantic remodelling in the nineteenth century gave Budatín the gentler, almost château-like outline it keeps now. Then, in the revolutionary year of 1849, it burned. It was rebuilt afterwards — and the round tower, as usual, stood.Zvyšok príbehu je napísaný slohmi, ktoré sa navrstvili jeden na druhý. Gotická prestavba stredoveký hrad rozšírila; renesančné múry a bašty pribudli vtedy, keď osmanské vpády a uhorské povstania spravili z považského údolia nebezpečný kraj; barok premenil pevnosť na sídlo a romantická prestavba v devätnástom storočí dala Budatínu jemnejšiu, takmer zámockú siluetu, ktorú si drží dodnes. Potom, v revolučnom roku 1849, zámok zhorel. Následne ho obnovili — a okrúhla veža, ako inak, stála ďalej.
