Every Slovak castle keeps a story, and Budatín’s is one of the darkest. Tradition has it that Katarína, a daughter of the Suňog lords of Budatín, fell in love with a man far below her station — and that her father, rather than permit the match, had her walled up alive inside the tower.Každý slovenský hrad si nesie svoju povesť a tá budatínska patrí k najtemnejším. Tradícia hovorí, že Katarína, dcéra budatínskych pánov zo Suňogovcov, sa zaľúbila do muža hlboko pod svojím stavom — a že jej otec radšej než by taký zväzok pripustil, dal dcéru zaživa zamurovať do veže.
It should be said plainly: this is a story, not a record. It is told at Budatín, told to visitors and to schoolchildren, and versions of it circulate wherever there is a thick-walled tower and a family with a reputation for severity. There is no documentary support for it. What has survived is the telling — and a tower solid enough to make the telling feel possible.Treba to povedať priamo: je to povesť, nie historický záznam. Rozpráva sa na Budatíne, rozpráva sa návštevníkom aj školákom a jej obmeny kolujú všade tam, kde stojí veža s hrubými múrmi a kde má rod povesť prísnosti. Nijaký doklad ju nepotvrdzuje. Zachovalo sa rozprávanie — a veža natoľko masívna, že to rozprávanie pôsobí uveriteľne.
