To understand why anyone would build a shopping centre into a grandstand, you have to know what football means in Trnava. Spartak — the Bíli Andeli, the White Angels — were the dominant club in Czechoslovakia at the turn of the 1970s, winning the league repeatedly and going as far as the semi-finals of the European Cup at the end of the 1960s. The stadium is named after Anton Malatinský, the coach of those years. By the twenty-first century the ground that carried all that history had fallen a long way behind what a modern licence requires. The decision taken was unusually bold: rather than move the club to a cheap site outside town, the city rebuilt the stadium where it already stood — a few minutes from the historic centre — and paid for a great deal of it by wrapping commercial floorspace into the same structure.
