Walk north from the forecourt and within a few minutes you are inside one of the most complete historic town centres in Slovakia — a rectangle of streets still wrapped in its medieval brick walls, laid out when Trnava became a free royal town in 1238, the first in what is now Slovakia to be granted that status.Toto je hlavný argument, prečo štadión stojí práve tu. The nickname comes from what happened next. When the Ottoman advance made Esztergom untenable in the sixteenth century, the archbishopric moved to Trnava and stayed until 1820. Churches, seminaries and religious orders followed, and a university was founded here in 1635 — for a century the only one in the Kingdom of Hungary, until it was moved to Buda in 1745. That is why a town of this size has a skyline of towers, and why people have called it the Slovak Rome for generations.Prezývka pochádza z toho, čo prišlo potom. Trnava's walls are among the most complete surviving town fortifications in Central Europe — long brick curtains with square bastions, still tracing the medieval rectangle. The square the whole town uses, with the town tower standing over it and a Baroque Trinity column at its centre.
