Smolenice is approached from the village, up a wooded road that keeps the building hidden until quite late — and then it is suddenly there, complete, roofed and immaculate, sitting on its shelf of ground with the forest closing in behind. The exterior is what most visitors get, and it is generous: crenellated wings, a gatehouse, steep dark roofs and the tall round tower with its conical cap that gives the château its silhouette. The interior is another matter. Because the building is in institutional use, the rooms are conference rooms and accommodation for visiting researchers, and they are not routinely on show. In some seasons the Academy opens a limited guided visit — typically the tower and a small part of the interior — but it depends entirely on the conference calendar.
