Its story is quieter and, in its way, sadder: a wealthy family began building a dream house on a ruin at almost exactly the moment the world that made such families possible was about to end. The First World War stopped the work; the century that followed swept away the estates, the titles and the plan. Physicists, chemists and historians have been arguing in its rooms for decades.
