After November 1989 the works and the mines had to sell on a market instead of filling a quota. The state enterprise Novácke chemické závody was privatised, later went through insolvency, and production has continued under new ownership as Fortischem, still by far the largest employer in the town. The mines kept going because the state kept paying for electricity made from domestic lignite — a subsidy defended for thirty years on the grounds that it kept thousands of people in work. That argument was the politics of the whole upper Nitra until it was finally lost.Po novembri 1989 museli závod aj bane predávať na trhu, nie plniť plán. Štátny podnik Novácke chemické závody sprivatizovali, neskôr prešiel konkurzom a výroba pokračuje pod novým vlastníkom ako Fortischem — stále zďaleka najväčší zamestnávateľ v meste. Bane fungovali ďalej, lebo štát naďalej platil elektrinu vyrobenú z domáceho uhlia; túto podporu tridsať rokov obhajovalo to, že drží v práci tisíce ľudí. Práve tento spor bol politikou celej hornej Nitry, až kým sa neskončil.
