Nováky lie on the Nitra a few kilometres downstream from Prievidza, in the middle of the Upper Nitra basin, with the volcanic Vtáčnik closing the view to the east. The storyHistória
Nováky are recorded from the Middle Ages as a village on the Nitra and stayed one, on good farmland, until the middle of the twentieth century. What made the modern town was the decision to put chemistry where the coal was: a works using local lignite as its raw material was begun here during the war and grew after it into one of the largest chemical plants in Slovakia.Nováky sa spomínajú od stredoveku ako dedina na Nitre a dedinou na dobrej pôde zostali až do polovice 20. storočia. Dnešné mesto vytvorilo rozhodnutie umiestniť chémiu tam, kde je uhlie: závod, ktorý mal domáci lignit spracúvať ako surovinu, tu vznikol počas vojny a po nej vyrástol na jeden z najväčších chemických podnikov na Slovensku.
The power station followed in the 1950s and 1960s, built to burn the lignite from the mines at Nováky, Cígeľ and Handlová, and the town's housing estates were built for the people the two plants needed.V 50. a 60. rokoch pribudla elektráreň, postavená na spaľovanie lignitu z baní v Novákoch, na Cígli a v Handlovej, a sídliská mesta vyrástli pre ľudí, ktorých oba závody potrebovali.

It is honest to say that Nováky is a place to understand rather than a place to sightsee. The set piece is the industrial landscape itself — the works, the settling ponds, the conveyor lines and the chimney visible from every road in the basin.Poctivé je povedať, že Nováky sú mestom skôr na pochopenie než na prezeranie pamiatok. What is worth the trip is close by. Bojnice, with its château, spa and zoo, is a quarter of an hour north; the Vtáčnik ridge is walked from the villages on its western foot; and the Nitrica valley behind the town leads up into quiet hill country with the reservoir at Nitrianske Rudno, used for swimming and water sports in summer.To, kvôli čomu sa oplatí prísť, je nablízku. Chemistry is the town's work. The Nováky chemical works has made calcium carbide, chlorine and PVC since its beginnings; the original state enterprise went through insolvency after 1989 and the plant has continued under new ownership as Fortischem, which remains by far the largest employer in the town.Prácou mesta je chémia. The coal that justified the whole complex is gone. Slovakia ended subsidised electricity from domestic lignite at the end of 2023, the power station stopped generating from it, and the mines have been wound down.
