History of NovákyDejiny — Nováky

Nováky is the clearest example in Slovakia of what industry can do to a village within one lifetime. It is named in the same charter of 1113 as Prievidza and Bojnice, and for the eight hundred years after it Nováky stayed a farming village beside the river Nitra. Then, in about fifteen years in the middle of the twentieth century, a chemical works went up here, the communist state added a forced-labour camp and a power station, and a village of farmers became a town of chemists and miners. All of it rested on the lignite in the neighbouring valleys — and the lignite ran out in 2023.Nováky sú najzreteľnejším slovenským príkladom toho, čo dokáže priemysel urobiť s dedinou za jeden ľudský život. Potom, za nejakých pätnásť rokov v polovici 20. storočia, tu vznikol chemický závod, komunistický štát k tomu pridal tábor nútenej práce a elektráreň — a z dediny sedliakov bolo mesto chemikov a baníkov. Všetko to stálo na hnedom uhlí zo susedných dolín. To sa v roku 2023 minulo.

  1. 11131113 One line in the Zobor charterJeden riadok v Zoborskej listine

Nováky first appears in writing in 1113, in the property charter of the Benedictine abbey on Zobor hill above Nitra, in the same list as Bojnice and Prievidza. The village sat on good flat land beside the river Nitra, which is why it was worth listing: this was ploughland, not defensible ground, and no castle was ever built here. For the next eight hundred years that is essentially the whole story — fields, a mill, a church, and lords who lived somewhere else. Keep that in mind when you look at the chimneys: everything industrial in Nováky is younger than your great-grandparents.

  2. 16771677 The church of St NicholasKostol svätého Mikuláša

The oldest building standing in Nováky today is the Roman Catholic church of St Nicholas, dated 1677. It went up in one of the hardest centuries this country has had — Ottoman raiding parties reached the upper Nitra, and the anti-Habsburg kuruc insurgents had burned Prievidza four years earlier — and it tells you how villages recover: they put the church up first. Nováky has no famous siege to report from those years, and a place with nothing to report is the normal case rather than the exception. Most Slovak villages went through the seventeenth century as Nováky did: paying, hiding and building again.

  3. 1909 – 19131909 – 1913 The valley industrialises; the village does notDolina industrializuje, dedina nie

Under Austria-Hungary the upper Nitra began to change, but not here. Industrial coal mining started at Handlová in 1909, some fifteen kilometres up the valley, and the railway reached it in 1913; Nováky, on the line between Prievidza and the lowland, simply watched the coal go past. It stayed what it had always been, a village of farmers on good soil, while the money and the people gathered around the pit. What eventually made Nováky an industrial town was not its own coal but its position: flat ground, a river for water, a railway, and a coalfield next door.V Rakúsko-Uhorsku sa horná Nitra začala meniť, ale nie tu.

  4. 1918 – 19391918 – 1939 The army chooses the valleyArmáda si vyberie dolinu

In Czechoslovakia the basin's coal became a matter of state, and the state invested in moving it — the tunnel line east out of Handlová opened in 1931. The decision that made modern Nováky, though, was a military one: shortly before the Second World War the army began building installations across the river Nitra at neighbouring Zemianske Kostoľany. A remote inland valley with coal, water, a railway and mountains all round it is exactly the sort of place a small country puts things it does not want bombed or captured. Everything that happened here between 1940 and 1945 follows from that choice.V Československu sa uhlie kotliny stalo štátnou vecou a štát investoval do toho, aby sa dalo odviezť — v roku 1931 otvorili tunelovú trať z Handlovej na východ.

  5. 1948 – 1960s1948 – 60. roky The chemical worksChemický závod

The chemical works, begun during the war on the idea of turning local lignite into calcium carbide, grew into one of the largest chemical plants in Slovakia and went on to make chlorine and PVC. The power station at Nováky went into operation in 1953 and was extended through the 1960s to burn the lignite of Handlová, Nováky and Cígeľ, and blocks of flats were built for the people both plants needed. Nováky turned from a village into an industrial town in a single generation. Elektráreň Nováky spustili v roku 1953 a v 60. rokoch ju rozšírili, aby pálila uhlie z Handlovej, Novák a Cígľa; pre ľudí oboch závodov vyrástli bytovky.

  6. November 1989 onwardsod novembra 1989 Chemistry without a planChémia bez plánu

After November 1989 the works and the mines had to sell on a market instead of filling a quota. The state enterprise Novácke chemické závody was privatised, later went through insolvency, and production has continued under new ownership as Fortischem, still by far the largest employer in the town. The mines kept going because the state kept paying for electricity made from domestic lignite — a subsidy defended for thirty years on the grounds that it kept thousands of people in work. That argument was the politics of the whole upper Nitra until it was finally lost. Štátny podnik Novácke chemické závody sprivatizovali, neskôr prešiel konkurzom a výroba pokračuje pod novým vlastníkom ako Fortischem — stále zďaleka najväčší zamestnávateľ v meste. Bane fungovali ďalej, lebo štát naďalej platil elektrinu vyrobenú z domáceho uhlia; túto podporu tridsať rokov obhajovalo to, že drží v práci tisíce ľudí.

  7. 1993 – 20 December 20231993 – 20. decembra 2023 The last coal in SlovakiaPosledné uhlie na Slovensku

Slovakia became independent in 1993 and the Nováky complex ran on much as before, with the same two problems: an ageing chemical works and a coal industry that existed only because somebody paid for it. Mining stays dangerous to the very end — four miners were killed in a collapse at the Nováky mine in 2006. At the end of 2023 the support for electricity from domestic lignite stopped, the power station stopped burning it, and on 20 December 2023 the last coal in Slovakia was brought up at the Nováky mine. What is left is the chemical works, the settling ponds and conveyor lines across the valley floor, and a transformation programme trying to put other work in place of the mines.
