The King’s Lime and the Castle’s GhostsKráľova lipa a zámocké strašidlá
Plenty of Slovak children know the tree before they know the castle. The story told locally is that Matthias Corvinus, who liked Bojnice and came back to it, would have a table carried out under the great lime in the castle grounds, and there dictate his letters and hear the petitions of people who had walked in to see him — which is how the tree came by its name, lipa kráľa Mateja, King Matthias’s lime. No charter says any of this happened. A very old lime is nonetheless standing there.Nemálo slovenských detí pozná ten strom skôr ako zámok. The castle’s other folklore is much younger and entirely deliberate. Since the early 1990s Bojnice has staged the International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits, when the rooms are handed over to costumed performers and the tours run after dark — white ladies, alchemists, a generous helping of theatrical screaming. It has grown into one of the best-attended events of its kind in the country, and for a whole generation of Slovak families it is the reason they first came here at all. If that is the weekend you want, plan it a long way ahead.Druhý folklór zámku je oveľa mladší a celkom zámerný. Od začiatku deväťdesiatych rokov sa v Bojniciach koná Medzinárodný festival duchov a strašidiel: miestnosti preberú kostýmovaní účinkujúci a prehliadky sa presunú do noci — biele panie, alchymisti a poriadna dávka divadelného kriku. Vyrástlo z neho jedno z najnavštevovanejších podujatí svojho druhu v krajine a pre celú generáciu slovenských rodín je dôvodom, prečo sem vôbec prvý raz prišli. Ak chcete práve tento víkend, plánujte ho s veľkým predstihom.
