The Crag Above the VillageBralo nad dedinou

The rock at Beckov is not a hill. It is a block of limestone standing alone above the Váh plain with vertical faces on three sides — a defensive position so obvious that it was fortified long before the stone castle, and a border post of the early Hungarian kingdom under the old name Blundix. The castle proper is recorded from the thirteenth century, watching the road up the valley just as Trenčín did a short way upstream.

Its great period began around the end of the fourteenth century, when King Sigismund granted Beckov to Stibor of Stiboricz — a Polish nobleman who rose to become one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, voivode of Transylvania and a founding member of the royal Order of the Dragon. Stibor turned a frontier fortress into a residence fit for that career: new palace ranges, a chapel, and the fortified upper castle that still gives the ruin its shape. His son, also Stibor, died in the 1430s and the line ended with him.

After the Stibors, Beckov passed through the hands of the kingdom’s magnate families and was strengthened again against the Ottoman threat in the sixteenth century. What ended it was not a siege but a fire: in the first half of the eighteenth century flames spread from the village up onto the rock and gutted the castle. Nobody rebuilt it. The walls have stood open to the weather for close to three hundred years, and modern work on them is conservation, not restoration.
