The Jester Who Got a CastleŠašo, ktorý dostal hrad
The story locals tell is that the castle is named after a court fool. In the tale, a jester called Becko so delighted his lord — in some versions by his wit alone, in others by saving the lord’s life — that when he was asked what reward he wanted, he pointed at the bare rock above the village and asked for a castle on it. And the lord, having given his word in front of the whole hall, built one.Miestni rozprávajú, že hrad je pomenovaný po dvornom šašovi. A pán, ktorý dal slovo pred celou sieňou, mu ho postavil.
A second tradition, darker, has the same lord throw a faithful old servant from the rock, and the dying man call him to God’s judgment within the year — a summons answered, in the story, by a snake in the castle garden. Neither tale is history. The place name is almost certainly older than the jester, and Stibor’s Beckov was built for reasons of politics and money. But the stories have been attached to this rock for centuries, and they are told here still — which, for a ruin, is its own kind of survival.Druhá tradícia, temnejšia, hovorí, že ten istý pán zhodil zo skaly verného starého sluhu a umierajúci ho povolal pred Boží súd do roka — a v príbehu na to predvolanie odpovedal had v hradnej záhrade.
