Spiš and neighbouring Šariš are castle country, and none of these three is far off the same trip. Two sit under the High Tatras; the third crowns a hill on the road east, and is one of the very few ruins in Slovakia that can stand comparison with Spiš for sheer size.Spiš a susedný Šariš sú krajinou hradov a ani jeden z tejto trojice neleží ďaleko od tej istej cesty. The border fortress of the northern Spiš, and a complete contrast to a bare ruin — much of it is roofed, restored and furnished. In the seventeenth century it sheltered the Polish crown jewels, and an open-air museum of regional wooden architecture stands below the walls.Pohraničná pevnosť severného Spiša a úplný protiklad holej zrúcaniny — veľká časť je zastrešená, obnovená a zariadená. Unusual in Slovakia for standing inside its town rather than on a crag above it — an urban castle at the edge of the old streets of Kežmarok, with the Tatras filling the horizon behind. East over the Branisko range, a second enormous ruin rides its own conical hill above the town of Veľký Šariš. It is far less visited than Spiš and much less consolidated — a walkers' castle, reached on foot up through the woods, with the reward of an empty summit.Na východ za hrebeňom Braniska sa na vlastnom kužeľovitom kopci nad mestom Veľký Šariš nesie druhá obrovská zrúcanina. Je oveľa menej navštevovaná než Spišský hrad a oveľa menej upravená — turistický hrad, na ktorý sa stúpa pešo cez les, s odmenou v podobe prázdneho vrcholu.
