The Romanesque palaceRománsky palác
The residential heart of the early royal castle, and the thing that makes the upper courtyard worth lingering in. Look along the courtyard face for the round-headed openings — the giveaway of Romanesque work — and for the sheer thickness of the walls where later floors have fallen away. It is a shell now, open to the sky, but the shape of a great hall is still perfectly readable.Obytné jadro raného kráľovského hradu a dôvod, prečo sa na hornom nádvorí oplatí zdržať. The Gothic chapelGotická kaplnka
The second of the two survivals worth naming, and the more delicate. Where the palace is mass, the chapel is line: pointed windows, slender proportions, the springing of vaults still visible on the walls. It is the clearest reminder that this was not only a fortress but a lordly household, with a household's religious life.Druhá z dvoch stavieb, ktoré tu treba vyzdvihnúť, a tá jemnejšia. From the top the region reads like a map: the walled ridge of Spišská Kapitula opposite, the roofs of Spišské Podhradie in the hollow between, Žehra's church away to the side, the Branisko range shutting off the east, and the High Tatras on the north-western skyline whenever the air is clear enough to show them.Vyjdite na ňu. One street inside one wall, lined with the houses of canons, with the twin-towered Cathedral of St Martin at its head. It is often called the Slovak Vatican, and it looks the part: a complete little ecclesiastical town that has barely changed shape in centuries. Access to the cathedral interior is not always open on demand — check locally before you climb up.Jedna ulica vnútri jedného opevnenia, lemovaná domami kanonikov, a na jej čele dvojvežová Katedrála svätého Martina. Hovorí sa jej slovenský Vatikán a naozaj tak vyzerá: celistvé malé cirkevné mestečko, ktoré po stáročia takmer nezmenilo tvar. Vstup do katedrály nie je vždy voľne prístupný — pred výstupom hore si to overte na mieste.
Žehra — the church of the Holy SpiritŽehra — Kostol Ducha Svätého
A small white village church on a knoll, with a shingled tower — modest from outside, and startling within. Its interior carries medieval wall paintings over large parts of the walls and vault, and they are the reason it sits inside the World Heritage boundary. Opening is limited and often arranged locally; do not assume you can simply walk in.Malý biely dedinský kostol na návrší so šindľovou vežou — zvonka skromný, vnútri prekvapivý. Jeho interiér nesie na veľkej časti stien a klenby stredoveké nástenné maľby a práve tie sú dôvodom, prečo leží vnútri hranice svetového dedičstva. Otváracie časy sú obmedzené a často sa riešia miestne; nepredpokladajte, že jednoducho vojdete.
