You arrive along the valley road at Oravský Podzámok, a village of a few streets pressed between the river and the cliff, and for a while the castle is simply the wall on your right — you are too close under it to see the top. The way in is at the bottom, through the Lower Castle: the broadest and newest part of the complex, the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century residential ranges built out on the only ground wide enough to take them. After that it is stairs. Long flights of them, some built onto the rock and some cut into it, turning back on themselves under archways and along parapets. The route goes gate, courtyard, stair, gate, courtyard, stair, and every courtyard is smaller and higher than the one before — the geometry of a fortress that could only ever be attacked from one direction, and only in single file. The Middle Castle holds the Thurzó-era palaces and the castle chapel; above it the rock narrows again and the last climb takes you into the Citadel, the oldest and tightest part of the whole place, where a few small rooms sit on the summit and there is nowhere further to go.Potom už len schody. The reward is the drop. From the top the river is directly below you, a green thread with the roofs of Oravský Podzámok along it, and the valley opens out in both directions — upstream into the open Orava country, downstream into a narrowing wooded valley. The route is one-way and upward: you do not double back through the rooms you have already seen, which is a mercy on the legs but means you should look properly the first time.Odmenou je hĺbka pod vami. Z vrchola máte rieku priamo pod nohami — zelenú niť so strechami Oravského Podzámku pozdĺž nej — a údolie sa otvára na obe strany: proti prúdu do otvorenej oravskej krajiny, po prúde do zužujúceho sa zalesneného údolia. Trasa je jednosmerná a stúpajúca: nevraciate sa späť cez miestnosti, ktoré ste už videli, čo je milosrdné pre nohy, ale znamená to, že sa treba poriadne pozerať hneď na prvýkrát.
