The CitadelCitadela
The small, thick-walled buildings on the summit are the beginning of the whole castle — everything below them was added later, and downward. There is very little floor space up here, which is exactly the point: this was the part that had to hold when the rest fell. It is also where the drop to the river is most vertigo-inducing.Malé stavby s hrubými múrmi na vrchole sú začiatkom celého hradu — všetko pod nimi pribudlo neskôr a smerom nadol. Podlahovej plochy je tu veľmi málo, a práve o to išlo: toto bola časť, ktorá musela vydržať, keď padne zvyšok. Zároveň je odtiaľto zráz k rieke najzávratnejší.

The middle levels are where the castle stops being purely military and starts being a residence. These are the ranges Juraj Thurzó built and furnished around the turn of the seventeenth century, and the castle chapel — one of the quietest rooms on the route — belongs to the same campaign of building.Na stredných úrovniach prestáva byť hrad čisto vojenský a začína byť sídlom. The castle is the seat of the Orava Museum, one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. Its exhibitions fill the rooms as you climb: furnished period interiors, an armoury, and natural-history and ethnographic collections drawn from the Orava region itself. It is a working museum, not a set — which is why the interiors are seen with a guide.Hrad je sídlom Oravského múzea, jedného z najstarších múzeí na Slovensku. It sounds like a warning rather than a highlight, but the stairways are the castle’s defining feature and its best architecture. They thread between the levels in tunnels and open flights, squeeze through gates barely wide enough for two, and give you, every twenty steps, a new angle on the rock you are standing on.Znie to skôr ako varovanie než ako lákadlo, ale schodiská sú najcharakteristickejšou črtou hradu aj jeho najlepšou architektúrou. Prepletajú sa medzi úrovňami v tuneloch aj otvorených ramenách, pretláčajú sa bránami sotva pre dvoch a každých dvadsať stupňov vám dajú nový pohľad na skalu, na ktorej stojíte.
