The name is not developer-speak. There really was a Kúpele Centrál here — a vast public baths, begun with a ground-breaking in 1973 and meant to be finished four years later. It was not. The centrepiece was to be a fifty-metre swimming pool, and the pool would not hold water; it had to be rebuilt more than once. The building finally opened in 1987, fourteen years after the first sod was turned, with the pool and steam baths at last in use.Ten názov nie je developerská reč. Naozaj tu stáli Kúpele Centrál — obrovské verejné kúpele, ktorých výkop sa začal v roku 1973 a mali byť hotové o štyri roky. Neboli. Hlavnou atrakciou mal byť päťdesiatmetrový plavecký bazén, lenže bazén nedržal vodu; museli ho prerábať viac ako raz. It did not last. Running costs and the technical problems that had dogged the construction closed the baths again within a few years, and the building spent the whole of the 1990s and 2000s standing empty in the middle of a busy city — a derelict swimming hall a hundred metres from one of Bratislava's main tram junctions. Successive plans to reopen it came to nothing. In its abandoned decades it became something else entirely: a well-known haunt for graffiti writers and urban explorers, one of those buildings a city half-forgets and half-mythologises. Postupné plány na jej znovuotvorenie vyšli navnivoč. V opustených desaťročiach sa z nej stalo niečo celkom iné: známe útočisko sprejerov a mestských prieskumníkov, jedna z tých budov, na ktoré mesto napoly zabudne a napoly si z nich spraví legendu. What replaced it went up between 2009 and 2012 to a design by the architect Ivan Kubík for the developer Immocap, and the shopping gallery opened in October 2012. The complex kept the old name and, in a neat piece of continuity, kept a pool as well — a twenty-five-metre one, inside a fitness centre, roughly half the length of the one that never worked. The site's history is genuinely legible in the finished thing, which is rarer than it should be. Ownership has since changed: the complex was sold on in 2016.To, čo prišlo namiesto nich, vyrástlo v rokoch 2009 až 2012 podľa návrhu architekta Ivana Kubíka pre developera Immocap a nákupná galéria sa otvorila v októbri 2012.
