You start at the bottom, in the village, where the road runs under the rock and the entrance sits below the walls. The way in leads through the lower castle — the outermost and youngest ring of defences — and from there the path begins to climb. It is not a long ascent, a quarter of an hour at a steady pace, but it is steep in places and the footing is old stone: worn steps, cobbles, ramps polished by two centuries of weather. Go slowly and the layers announce themselves as you pass, a rubble core here, a dressed corner there, a gun embrasure cut straight through an older wall.Začínate dole, v obci, kde cesta vedie popod skalu a vstup leží pod hradbami. Choďte pomaly a vrstvy sa cestou ohlásia samy — tu jadro z lomového kameňa, tam otesané nárožie, inde strieľňa prerazená rovno cez starší múr.
In the middle castle the visit stops being a walk and starts being an excavation. Ground plans are laid out in the grass and in low courses of stone, among them the foundations of the Great Moravian church, uncovered and left legible, so that you find yourself standing inside a ninth-century floor plan. Nearby are the well, sunk deep through the rock, and the surviving cellars and vaults beneath the ruined buildings — the coolest, darkest and quietest part of Devín, and the only place on the hill that is out of the wind. What is left of the roofed buildings holds the museum’s exhibition.V strednom hrade sa prehliadka mení z prechádzky na archeológiu. Pôdorysy sú vyznačené v tráve a v nízkych radoch kameňa, medzi nimi aj základy veľkomoravského kostola, odkryté a ponechané čitateľné, takže zrazu stojíte v pôdoryse deviateho storočia. Neďaleko je studňa hĺbená hlboko do skaly a zachované pivnice a klenby pod zrúcanými budovami — najchladnejšia, najtmavšia a najtichšia časť Devína a jediné miesto na kopci mimo vetra. V tom, čo zostalo zo zastrešených stavieb, sídli expozícia múzea.
The last stretch brings you into the upper castle on the summit, the oldest core, and this is where the explosion is most obvious: walls that stop where a floor used to be, a stair that climbs into open sky. From the northern edge you look straight down onto the Maiden Tower, the small watchtower perched by itself on a needle of rock above the Danube — you see it from above and from across, never from inside. And on the highest terrace the whole point of the place lies underneath you: the green Morava sliding into the grey Danube along a visible seam, the flat Austrian bank opposite with Hainburg and its own ruined castle, and the wooded hump of the Braunsberg behind it. Expect wind. There is nearly always wind up here, and there is no shade at all.Posledný úsek vás vyvedie do horného hradu na vrchole, do najstaršieho jadra — a práve tu je výbuch najviditeľnejší: múry sa končia tam, kde bývala podlaha, schodisko stúpa do holého neba. Zo severnej hrany hľadíte priamo dole na Panenskú vežu, malú strážnu vežičku osamotenú na skalnej ihle nad Dunajom — vidíte ju zhora a zboku, nikdy zvnútra. A na najvyššej terase máte celý zmysel tohto miesta pod nohami: zelenú Moravu, ktorá sa viditeľným švom vlieva do sivého Dunaja, plochý rakúsky breh oproti s Hainburgom a jeho vlastnou hradnou zrúcaninou a zalesnený chrbát Braunsbergu za ním. Rátajte s vetrom. Hore fúka takmer vždy a tieň tu nie je nijaký.
