The Maiden in the TowerPanna vo veži
The little tower on its pinnacle is called the Maiden Tower — Panenská veža — and the story attached to it is the best-known thing about Devín after the ruin itself. A young woman, the versions agree, was shut into the tower against her will: imprisoned by a father, or by a jealous lord, or by a captor, depending on who is telling it. It is a good story, and it is not history. The legend belongs to the nineteenth century and to the Romantic appetite for ruins, doomed maidens and national feeling; it grew up around a tower that had already stood for a very long time without a name in any record. Nothing documents a prisoner there. What the tower actually was is far more ordinary — a small watchpost on a rock that commands the river — and the name it carries today says more about the century that gave it than about anyone who ever lived in it.Je to dobrý príbeh a nie sú to dejiny. One coincidence has certainly helped the legend along. A Frankish chronicler of the ninth century, writing down the name Dowina, explained it as meaning “maiden”, and that gloss survives in the annals for anyone to find. But a thousand years separate the chronicler from the storytellers, and there is no thread running between them. Tell the legend; enjoy it; just do not mistake it for a record.Povesti iste pomohla jedna zhoda okolností.
