The Maiden TowerPanenská veža
One small tower standing alone on a splinter of rock above the Danube, cut off from the castle by a drop. It is the picture on every postcard of Devín and the reason so many photographs of the castle are taken from the water or from the Austrian bank. You look down on it from the upper castle; the pinnacle it stands on is not somewhere you walk out onto.Jediná malá veža stojaca osamotene na skalnom úlomku nad Dunajom, oddelená od hradu prepadliskom. The Great Moravian churchVeľkomoravský kostol
Excavation uncovered the ground plan of a ninth-century church inside the castle, and it has been left visible — a modest rectangle of stone set into the grass. It is easy to walk straight past, and it is one of the oldest pieces of Christian building found anywhere in Slovakia.Výskum odkryl vnútri hradu pôdorys kostola z deviateho storočia a ten zostal viditeľný — skromný kamenný obdĺžnik vsadený do trávy. The Gate of FreedomBrána slobody
Down at the point where the two rivers meet, a memorial raised in the mid-2000s remembers the people killed at this border while trying to reach the West between the late 1940s and 1989. It stands outside the castle on the open riverside and costs nothing to visit. Beneath the ruined buildings, vaulted cellars survive intact where everything above them does not, and the museum uses them for its displays. The highest terrace looks straight down on the seam where the greener water of the Morava runs into the Danube. Austria is directly opposite, near enough to read the shape of Hainburg’s roofs, with the Braunsberg rising behind.
