Europa SC stands in the Trosky quarter, a short way south-west of the historic core, on the railway-station side of Banská Bystrica, with the wooded ridge of Urpín rising behind it. That location tells you almost everything about how the place is used. This is a centre you drive to or take a bus to, not one you wander into on a stroll around the old town — and yet it is not out on the ring road either, marooned in a field the way so many Central European malls are. It sits inside the city, close enough that a visit to it and a walk on the square can be the same afternoon.Europa SC stojí na Troskách, kúsok juhozápadne od historického jadra, na tej strane Banskej Bystrice, kde je železničná stanica, a za ním sa dvíha zalesnený hrebeň Urpína. Poloha o tomto mieste prezradí takmer všetko. Je to centrum, kam sa ide autom alebo autobusom, nie také, na ktoré natrafíte pri prechádzke starým mestom — a zároveň nestojí ani kdesi pri obchvate, vysadené uprostred poľa, ako toľké stredoeurópske nákupné centrá. Je vnútri mesta, dosť blízko na to, aby sa návšteva centra a prechádzka po námestí zmestili do jedného popoludnia.
It opened in December 2006, and the multiplex cinema part of it was finished the following year, in 2007 — the building arrived, in other words, in two moves rather than one, first as a place to shop and then as a place to spend an evening. Together with the office tower behind it, it went on to win Slovakia's Stavba roka — the national Building of the Year competition — in 2009, with the jury singling out the boldness of the structure, the care of the design and the restraint of its colours. It is usually described as the largest and most-visited shopping and entertainment centre in the whole Banská Bystrica region, which in a region of small towns and long valleys is less a boast about the building than a statement about where people in central Slovakia go when they need a choice.Otvorili ho v decembri 2006 a multiplexové kino, ktoré je jeho súčasťou, dokončili o rok neskôr, v roku 2007 — budova teda prišla na dvakrát, najprv ako miesto na nákupy a až potom ako miesto, kde sa dá stráviť večer. Spolu s administratívnou vežou za sebou získala v roku 2009 ocenenie Stavba roka, teda celoslovenskú súťaž o stavbu roka, pričom porota vyzdvihla odvahu konštrukčného riešenia, citlivosť návrhu a zdržanlivosť vo farebnosti. Zvyčajne sa označuje za najväčšie a najnavštevovanejšie nákupné a zábavné centrum v celom Banskobystrickom kraji — a v kraji malých miest a dlhých dolín to nie je ani tak chvála na budovu ako skôr konštatovanie, kam ľudia zo stredného Slovenska chodia, keď potrebujú výber.
