Burnt on Purpose, the Story GoesPodpálený zámerne, hovorí sa

By the beginning of the nineteenth century Čabraď had no function left. The frontier war it had been rebuilt for was two hundred years gone; the owners lived elsewhere; the valley was empty. An intact but unwatched fortress a long walk from the nearest village is an obvious place to shelter, and the story told locally — repeated in every account of the castle — is that it had become a haunt of outlaws and vagrants, and that the owner solved the problem in 1812 by having the castle burnt.

A castle nobody wanted, in a valley nobody watched, solved with a box of matches.

Treat the detail as tradition rather than as documented fact: this kind of story attaches itself easily to abandoned buildings, and the neat motive may be tidier than the truth. What is not in doubt is the outcome. Čabraď burned, nobody rebuilt it, and for the better part of two centuries the roofless walls stood in the trees with nothing between them and the weather. Čabraď zhorela, nikto ju neobnovil a takmer dve storočia stáli múry bez striech medzi stromami, bez čohokoľvek medzi nimi a počasím.

Which is what makes the last thirty years remarkable. The people who reversed that decline were not a state agency with a budget but an association of volunteers, coming back summer after summer to a site with no road, no power and no water supply, to cap wall-heads and rebuild arches by hand. Almost everything standing above head height at Čabraď today owes something to that.Práve preto je posledných tridsať rokov pozoruhodných. Ten úpadok neobrátila štátna inštitúcia s rozpočtom, ale združenie dobrovoľníkov, ktorí sa leto čo leto vracali na miesto bez cesty, bez elektriny a bez vodovodu, aby ručne zakrývali koruny múrov a domurovávali oblúky. Takmer všetko, čo dnes na Čabradi stojí nad výškou hlavy, im niečo dlhuje.
