Slovak building history is legible because the country was poor at the right moments. There was money for great Gothic churches in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries when the mines were producing; there was money for Renaissance town houses in the sixteenth; and then for two hundred years there mostly was not, which is why so much medieval fabric survived instead of being replaced.Dejiny slovenského staviteľstva sú čitateľné práve preto, že krajina bola chudobná v tých správnych okamihoch. Material follows geology. The north builds in timber because it stands in forest; the mining towns build in stone because they are cut into rock; the southern lowland builds in brick and, until living memory, in rammed earth and mud, because there is no stone in the ground for a hundred kilometres.Materiál sleduje geológiu.
