Between the 1960s and the early 1980s Slovakia built more, and more ambitiously, than at any time before. The Slovak Radio building in Bratislava is the emblem: a steel inverted pyramid, designed in the 1960s and finished in the early 1980s, standing on its point with the concert studio inside. The bridge, and what it costMost a čo stál
Most SNP, the bridge over the Danube opened in 1972, hangs its deck from a single inclined pylon carrying a flying-saucer restaurant and viewing deck — for a time the longest cable-stayed bridge with one pylon and one cable plane anywhere. It is also the reason a large part of Bratislava's old town was demolished, which is the other half of the story and is not usually on the postcard.Most SNP, otvorený nad Dunajom v roku 1972, zavesuje mostovku na jediný naklonený pylón s reštauráciou a vyhliadkou v tvare lietajúceho taniera — istý čas najdlhší zavesený most s jedným pylónom a jednou rovinou lán na svete. Paneláks and the argumentPaneláky a spor
The other legacy is housing. Petržalka, built across the Danube from the 1970s, is one of the largest panel housing estates in central Europe and holds well over a hundred thousand people. Nationally, a very large share of the population lives in a panelák, and the type is neither the slum a foreign visitor sometimes expects nor the success its planners claimed: flats are small, solidly built, cheap to heat since insulation, and surrounded by more mature green space than almost any newer development offers.Druhým dedičstvom je bývanie. Petržalka, stavaná od 70. rokov za Dunajom, patrí k najväčším panelovým sídliskám v strednej Európe a žije v nej výrazne vyše stotisíc ľudí. Celoštátne býva v paneláku veľmi veľká časť obyvateľstva a tento typ nie je ani slum, aký niekedy čaká zahraničný návštevník, ani úspech, o akom hovorili jeho plánovači: byty sú malé, solídne postavené, po zateplení lacné na kúrenie a obklopené vzrastlejšou zeleňou, než ponúka takmer ktorákoľvek novšia výstavba.
Very little of this layer is legally protected, and buildings of the period have been demolished or radically reclad — among them Bratislava's Istropolis congress hall, lost despite a long campaign. Whether the rest is heritage or an embarrassment is an argument going on right now, in public, and a visitor who looks at these buildings with fresh eyes is a useful participant in it.Právne je z tejto vrstvy chránené len málo a stavby tohto obdobia sa búrajú alebo radikálne prekrývajú novými fasádami — medzi nimi bratislavský Istropolis, ktorý sa napriek dlhej kampani nepodarilo zachrániť.
