In 1620 there were fourteen households in Šútovo. That is a small number, and it is the point: the fields on the flat by the river are thin and narrow, and the mountain wall starts immediately behind the houses. During the Ottoman century the fighting itself stayed far to the south — no Turkish army came up the Váh gorge — but the wars were paid for by taxes on villages exactly like this one, and by men taken for the county's levies.
