Slovakia's best-known thermal water park, routinely called its largest, stands on the edge of Liptovský Mikuláš, between the Tatras and the Low Tatras, and it runs the whole year through — the outdoor pools steam hardest in January. The park lies on the north-western edge of Liptovský Mikuláš, near the Liptovská Mara reservoir, on the floor of the Liptov basin. The Western Tatras close the northern horizon and the Low Tatras the southern one, which is the point of an outdoor pool here: warm water, and snow in view.Areál leží na severozápadnom okraji Liptovského Mikuláša, neďaleko nádrže Liptovská Mara, na dne Liptovskej kotliny. Severný obzor uzatvárajú Západné Tatry, južný Nízke Tatry — a práve v tom je zmysel vonkajšieho bazéna na tomto mieste: teplá voda a sneh na dohľad.
The water is geothermal, raised by a deep borehole rather than rising by itself. Rain sinks into the limestone rims of the basin, warms far below, dissolves minerals, and comes back up too hot to swim in, so it is cooled before it reaches a pool. Bešeňová, some ten kilometres west beyond the reservoir, works the same way — which is why both keep outdoor water running in midwinter. The geology behind it is the same across the country.Voda je geotermálna, dvíha ju hlboký vrt, nevystupuje sama. Dážď vsakuje do vápencových okrajov kotliny, hlboko pod povrchom sa ohreje, rozpustí minerály a vracia sa hore príliš horúca na kúpanie, takže sa pred vstupom do bazéna ochladzuje. Bešeňová, asi desať kilometrov na západ za nádržou, funguje rovnako — preto môžu obe udržať vonkajšiu vodu v prevádzke aj uprostred zimy. Geológia za tým je v celej krajine tá istá.

The resort itselfSamotný areál
Tatralandia is large and openly commercial — a resort rather than a bathhouse: an apron of outdoor pools, heated indoor halls that keep tropical planting alive through the winter, saunas, slides, and accommodation on the site itself, so a family can arrive on Friday and not touch the car again.Tatralandia je veľká a otvorene komerčná — skôr rezort než kúpeľný dom: plocha vonkajších bazénov, vykurované kryté haly, v ktorých cez zimu prežíva tropická výsadba, sauny, tobogany a ubytovanie priamo v areáli, takže rodina môže prísť v piatok a auta sa už nedotknúť.
What is open depends on the season, and that catches people out. The year-round core is the thermal water and the indoor halls; the outdoor recreational pools, the outdoor slides and the grass belong to summer. January is quieter, steamier, and simply a different place from August.Čo je otvorené, závisí od sezóny — a práve to ľudí zvykne prekvapiť. Celoročným jadrom sú termálna voda a kryté haly; vonkajšie rekreačné bazény, vonkajšie tobogany a trávnik patria k letu. V januári je tu tichšie, viac sa parí a je to jednoducho iné miesto než v auguste.
Leisure, not a cureOddych, nie liečba
Slovakia's spa towns treat: a diagnosis, a prescribed course, weeks rather than hours. Piešťany is known for its sulphurous mud and for the rheumatic conditions treated there, and its cure is part of the health system. Tatralandia does none of that — no indications, no course, no doctor's assessment on arrival. The water is warm and mineral, and that is the entire offer.Slovenské kúpeľné mestá liečia: diagnóza, predpísaná kúra, týždne namiesto hodín. Piešťany sú známe sírnym bahnom a liečbou reumatických ochorení a kúpeľná liečba je súčasťou zdravotnej starostlivosti. Tatralandia nič také nerobí — žiadne indikácie, žiadna kúra, žiadne vstupné lekárske vyšetrenie. Voda je teplá a minerálna, a to je celá ponuka.
What it is known for instead is scale and winter: routinely called the largest thermal water park in the country, and open through the winter, when the outdoor water is at its best — in a region whose other great industry is skiing, that is not a coincidence.Známa je namiesto toho rozlohou a zimou: bežne sa označuje za najväčší termálny aquapark v krajine a má otvorené aj cez zimu, keď je vonkajšia voda najlepšia — v regióne, ktorého druhým veľkým odvetvím je lyžovanie, to nie je náhoda.
Part of a bigger basinSúčasť väčšej kotliny
Liptov sells one holiday assembled from several parts, and the park is one of them. The Demänovská valley opens south of the town, with Jasná at its head and two show caves along it; Bešeňová's terraced pools lie west beyond the reservoir. Most visitors do two or three in a week.Liptov predáva jednu dovolenku poskladanú z viacerých častí a aquapark je jednou z nich. Na juh od mesta sa otvára Demänovská dolina s Jasnou v jej závere a s dvoma sprístupnenými jaskyňami po ceste; terasové bazény Bešeňovej ležia na západe za nádržou. Väčšina návštevníkov stihne za týždeň dve či tri z nich.
That is also why the park fills when the mountains empty: a wet August afternoon, or the day a family decides it has skied enough. Liptovský Mikuláš itself — its square, its museums, the Jánošík trial — is a short way east and sees less of this traffic than it deserves.Preto sa aquapark zapĺňa vtedy, keď sa hory vyprázdňujú: v daždivé augustové popoludnie alebo v deň, keď rodina usúdi, že už lyžovala dosť. Samotný Liptovský Mikuláš — jeho námestie, múzeá, Jánošíkov proces — je kúsok na východ a z tohto ruchu zachytí menej, než by si zaslúžil.
Getting thereAko sa tam dostať
The D1 motorway runs the length of the Liptov basin and the park is signposted from the Liptovský Mikuláš exits. Parking is on site, and that is how almost everyone arrives.Liptovskou kotlinou vedie po celej dĺžke diaľnica D1 a k areálu vedie značenie z výjazdov na Liptovský Mikuláš. Parkovisko je priamo pri ňom a takto sem prichádza takmer každý.
By train, Liptovský Mikuláš is on the main line between Žilina, Poprad and Košice; the park is a few kilometres out, and local buses cover the gap — more often in season than out of it.
