Rajecké Teplice stands on the Rajčanka about fifteen kilometres south of Žilina, in the Rajec valley between the western wall of the Malá Fatra and the Strážovské vrchy. It is in the Žilina region, not Trenčín, and is regularly confused with Trenčianske Teplice — a different spa town in a different valley.Rajecké Teplice ležia na Rajčanke asi pätnásť kilometrov južne od Žiliny, v Rajeckej doline medzi západnou stenou Malej Fatry a Strážovskými vrchmi. Patria do Žilinského kraja, nie do Trenčianskeho, a pravidelne sa zamieňajú s Trenčianskymi Teplicami — iným kúpeľným mestom v inej doline.

The water surfaces warm, at around thirty-eight degrees, and is weakly mineralised, with calcium and magnesium the characteristic elements. It is why there is a town here at all.Voda vyviera teplá, pri teplote okolo tridsiatich ôsmich stupňov, je slabo mineralizovaná a charakteristické sú v nej vápnik a horčík. Práve vďaka nej tu mesto vôbec vzniklo.

Use of the springs is old. Written records reach back to the fourteenth century, when this was a bath belonging to the Lietava estate; it became a spa in the modern sense during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and has been rebuilt more than once since.Využívanie prameňov je staré. Písomné záznamy siahajú do štrnásteho storočia, keď tu bol kúpeľ patriaci k lietavskému panstvu; kúpeľmi v dnešnom zmysle sa toto miesto stalo v devätnástom a dvadsiatom storočí a odvtedy ho neraz prestavali.

The spa is not a quarter of the town, it is most of the town: park, bath houses and hotels hold the centre and the streets arrange themselves around them. The complex trades as Aphrodite, the name most Slovaks use when they mean the place at all.Kúpele nie sú štvrťou mesta, tvoria jeho väčšinu: park, kúpeľné domy a hotely zaberajú centrum a ulice sa okolo nich usporadúvajú. Areál funguje pod menom Aphrodite — pod tým menom si toto miesto vybaví väčšina Slovákov.

What a visitor sees is a lake with a fountain, a park free to walk through, villas from the decades after the railway arrived, and the modern pool halls behind them. The transport museum in the park is the one indoor attraction here with nothing to do with water.Návštevník uvidí jazero s fontánou, park, ktorým sa dá prejsť zadarmo, vily z desaťročí po príchode železnice a za nimi moderné bazénové haly. Múzeum dopravy v parku je jedinou vnútornou atrakciou, ktorá s vodou nesúvisí.

The town is small enough to cross on foot in a quarter of an hour, and because treatment runs all year, so does the season.Mesto sa dá prejsť pešo za štvrťhodinu a keďže liečba beží po celý rok, beží aj sezóna.

What the water is used forNa čo sa voda používa

Rajecké Teplice is known for treating disorders of the locomotor system and of the nervous system — the indications the spa has carried for decades. In Slovakia spa treatment of that kind is part of health care rather than tourism: a course is assessed, prescribed and measured in weeks.Rajecké Teplice sú známe liečbou chorôb pohybového ústrojenstva a nervových chorôb — indikácií, ktoré kúpele nesú už desaťročia. Na Slovensku je kúpeľná liečba tohto druhu súčasťou zdravotnej starostlivosti, nie cestovného ruchu: kúra sa indikuje, predpisuje a počíta sa na týždne.

The other half of the business is leisure — pools, saunas and short stays of a night or two. Day admission without staying is usually possible. What suits any one person is a matter for a patient and a doctor, and terms change from season to season, so confirm with the spa before building a trip around either.Druhou polovicou prevádzky je oddych — bazény, sauny a krátke pobyty na jednu či viac nocí. Denný vstup bez ubytovania býva možný. Čo komu vyhovuje, je vecou pacienta a lekára, a podmienky sa menia zo sezóny na sezónu, takže si ich pred cestou overte priamo v kúpeľoch.

The valley around itDolina okolo mesta

Marked paths climb straight out of the town into the western ridges of the Malá Fatra, and a cycle route follows the Rajčanka the length of the valley.Značené chodníky stúpajú priamo z mesta do západných hrebeňov Malej Fatry a dolinou popri Rajčanke vedie cyklotrasa.

Up the valley is Rajec, the market town at its head, and past it Rajecká Lesná, whose room-sized carved nativity sets the Christmas story among Slovak landmarks; further south, the painted houses of Čičmany. Lietava Castle, one of the largest ruins in the country, stands on its rock a short way down the valley.Hore dolinou leží Rajec, trhové mestečko v jej hornej časti, a za ním Rajecká Lesná s vyrezávaným betlehemom veľkosti izby, ktorý zasadzuje vianočný príbeh medzi slovenské pamiatky; ešte ďalej na juh sú maľované domy v Čičmanoch. Lietavský hrad, jedna z najrozsiahlejších zrúcanín na Slovensku, stojí na svojej skale kúsok nižšie v doline.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Trains on the branch line from Žilina to Rajec call at the town, and buses up the valley are frequent. Žilina is on the main line and the motorway, so the place is easier to reach without a car than its size suggests.V meste zastavujú vlaky odbočnej trate zo Žiliny do Rajca a autobusy dolinou premávajú často. Samotná Žilina leží na hlavnej trati aj pri diaľnici, takže sa sem dá dostať bez auta ľahšie, než by veľkosť mesta naznačovala.

By car it is the valley road south along the Rajčanka. Once you arrive there is little reason to drive again: park, pools, museum and station sit within the same few streets.Autom je to cesta dolinou na juh popri Rajčanke. Po príchode nie je veľmi dôvod znova sadať za volant: park, bazény, múzeum aj stanica sú v tých istých pár uliciach.
