First in the City, and Then OvertakenPrvé v meste — a potom predbehnuté
In 2001 a shopping centre was still a new idea in a Slovak regional city. Retail meant the old department store on the square, the market, and a scatter of small shops on the ground floors of the housing blocks. What opened on Vysokoškolákov that year was the first of the other thing: everything under one roof, a supermarket anchoring one end, parking at the door, open late. For most of a decade it was simply where Žilina went, and it was built where the people were rather than where the tourists were — at the edge of Vlčince, the city's largest housing estate.V roku 2001 bolo obchodné centrum v slovenskom krajskom meste ešte novinkou. Nakupovalo sa v starom obchodnom dome na námestí, na trhovisku a v drobných predajniach na prízemiach panelákov. To, čo v tom roku otvorili na ulici Vysokoškolákov, bolo prvé z tej druhej kategórie: všetko pod jednou strechou, supermarket ako kotva na jednom konci, parkovisko pri dverách, otvorené dlho do večera. Takmer celé desaťročie to bolo jednoducho miesto, kam Žilina chodila — a postavili ho tam, kde boli ľudia, nie tam, kde chodia turisti: na okraji Vlčiniec, najväčšieho sídliska v meste.
Then came the autumn of 2010, when two much larger centres opened within a few weeks of each other in the middle of town, and the arithmetic of Žilina retail changed overnight. A single-storey centre out among the tower blocks was never going to win a contest for the widest fashion selection, and it stopped trying. A full refurbishment followed, along with a change of name — the centre now also trades as Atrium Dubeň, after the international property group that owns it — and the offer settled into what a housing estate of tens of thousands of people actually needs on a weekday.Potom prišla jeseň roku 2010, keď v strede mesta v priebehu pár týždňov otvorili dve oveľa väčšie centrá, a matematika žilinského obchodu sa zmenila zo dňa na deň. Jednopodlažné centrum medzi panelákmi nemohlo vyhrať súťaž o najširší výber módy — a prestalo sa o ňu uchádzať. Nasledovala celková rekonštrukcia a zmena názvu — centrum dnes vystupuje aj ako Atrium Dubeň, podľa medzinárodnej realitnej skupiny, ktorá ho vlastní — a ponuka sa ustálila na tom, čo sídlisko s desiatkami tisíc obyvateľov naozaj potrebuje v pracovný deň.
Not every building has to be the biggest. Some only have to be the closest.Nie každá budova musí byť najväčšia. Niektorej stačí byť najbližšie.
