The approach begins in Sklabinský Podzámok, the village directly beneath the castle, and takes a marked path up through woodland and meadow. It is not long — the sort of climb that warms you up without becoming an expedition — and it opens out onto the spur with the walls above you.Prístup sa začína v Sklabinskom Podzámku, v dedine priamo pod hradom, a vedie po značenom chodníku hore lesom a lúkou. Nie je dlhý — taký výstup, pri ktorom sa zohrejete, no nestane sa z neho výprava — a otvorí sa na ostroh s múrmi nad vami.
Inside, the site divides in two and the division is the interesting part. There is the medieval castle proper: the older core on the highest ground, tower stumps, gate passage, curtain wall following the contour. And there is the Renaissance manor the Révays built inside the defences later on — a rectangular block with the regular window rhythm of a house rather than a fortress. Standing between them you can watch a castle turn into a residence without ever leaving the walls.Vnútri sa areál delí na dve časti a práve to delenie je najzaujímavejšie. Je tu vlastný stredoveký hrad: staršie jadro na najvyššom mieste, pahýle veží, vstupný priechod, obvodový múr kopírujúci vrstevnicu. A je tu renesančný kaštieľ, ktorý Révaiovci neskôr postavili vnútri opevnenia — obdĺžnikový blok s pravidelným rytmom okien, aký patrí domu, nie pevnosti. Keď stojíte medzi nimi, sledujete, ako sa hrad mení na sídlo — a ani raz pritom neopustíte hradby.
Much of what stands is stabilised rather than restored, and the difference between old masonry and recent work is easy to see: capped wall-heads, rebuilt arches, new timber where a floor or a landing has been made safe. Look out over the parapet and the whole Turiec basin lies below — a flat green floor between two mountain ranges, with Martin away across it.Väčšina toho, čo stojí, je skôr spevnená než zreštaurovaná a rozdiel medzi starým murivom a novšou prácou je ľahko viditeľný: zakryté koruny múrov, domurované oblúky, nové drevo tam, kde bolo treba zabezpečiť podlahu alebo podestu.
