Two things kept the large animals here when western Europe lost them. The Carpathians are continuous: an animal can walk from the Slovak mountains to Romania without crossing open farmland for long. And Slovak forest cover has been rising for a century as marginal fields went out of use, so there is more habitat now than there was in 1900.Veľké zvieratá tu udržali dve veci.
