Bzince pod Javorinou lie a few kilometres west of Nové Mesto nad Váhom, where the flat of the Váh valley ends and the White Carpathians begin. Above them rises Veľká Javorina, at a little under a thousand metres the highest point of the range and the border ridge with Moravia.Bzince pod Javorinou ležia pár kilometrov západne od Nového Mesta nad Váhom, tam, kde sa končí rovina považskej doliny a začínajú Biele Karpaty. The village is not one place. Three older settlements — Dolné Bzince, Horné Bzince and Hrušové — carry a single name today, and the slopes above them are dotted with kopanice, the scattered farmsteads cleared out of the forest. There is no square; the parts string along the valley road rather than gather.Obec nie je jedno miesto. The pattern is the standard one of this border country: between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries families took strips of forest on the ridges, cleared them and stayed. The soil is thin, the fields steep, and the household ran on sheep, plums, flax and seasonal work away from home.Vzorec je pre toto pohraničie štandardný: medzi 16. a 18. storočím si rodiny brali na chrbtoch pruhy lesa, vyklčovali ich a zostali. The country under Javorina is Lutheran, and in a settlement of this shape the congregation and its school held it together. Ľudmila Riznerová was born into that world in 1872, the daughter of the Lutheran teacher, and wrote under a name made from the mountain: Podjavorinská, the one from under Javorina.Kraj pod Javorinou je evanjelický a v takto rozsypanom sídle ho držali pokope cirkevný zbor a jeho škola. Do tohto sveta sa v roku 1872 narodila Ľudmila Riznerová, dcéra evanjelického učiteľa, a písala pod menom utvoreným podľa vrchu: Podjavorinská, tá spod Javoriny.
She wrote lyric verse and prose about life on the Kopanice, and then the children's poems that made her a household name — the verse tale of the sparrow Čin-čin is still read to Slovak children. Nothing here is ticketed as an attraction. The village has a memorial room to Podjavorinská, her grave, and the Lutheran church with the old school at its heart. The memorial room is small and not staffed continuously; ask locally or arrange a visit ahead rather than expecting a door to be open.Nič tu nie je spoplatnenou atrakciou. Obec má pamätnú izbu Ľudmily Podjavorinskej, jej hrob a evanjelický kostol so starou školou v jadre. Pamätná izba je malá a nemá stály personál; radšej sa spýtajte v obci alebo si návštevu dohodnite vopred, než by ste čakali, že bude otvorené.
The larger part of her legacy is in the Podjavorinské museum down in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, which covers the Kopanice as a whole — the sensible substitute if the village room is shut.Väčšia časť jej odkazu je v Podjavorinskom múzeu dole v Novom Meste nad Váhom, ktoré sa venuje kopaniciam ako celku — rozumná náhrada, ak je izba v obci zatvorená.
The other reason to come is the walk. Marked paths climb from the village through beech woods to the ridge and the summit of Veľká Javorina, several hours there and back. The summit is the border, and it has been a meeting place for Czechs and Slovaks since the national movement of the nineteenth century; the gathering held there each summer keeps that going.Druhým dôvodom prísť je túra. Značené chodníky stúpajú z obce bučinami na hrebeň a na vrchol Veľkej Javoriny — niekoľko hodín tam a späť. Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
Bzince is lived in and farmed, and the kopanice above it are private property — working farms, and houses kept for weekends by families who moved down to the towns. The tracks between them are field roads, not routes laid out for visitors; use the marked paths.V Bzinciach sa býva a hospodári a kopanice nad obcou sú súkromné — fungujúce gazdovstvá aj domy, ktoré si na víkendy nechali rodiny presťahované do miest. The church is a working church and the memorial room is a village institution, not a museum with a rota of guides. Weekdays are better than Sundays for anything staffed, and the summer weekend of the Javorina gathering is the one time the roads up here are busy.Kostol je fungujúcim kostolom a pamätná izba je obecnou inštitúciou, nie múzeom so službami sprievodcov. Buses run from Nové Mesto nad Váhom, which is also the nearest station: it sits on the main Bratislava–Žilina railway, and the branch line to Myjava and the Czech border climbs through this country. By car it is a short turn west off the Váh valley road; the lanes up to the kopanice are narrow and steep.Autobusy premávajú z Nového Mesta nad Váhom, ktoré je zároveň najbližšou stanicou: leží na hlavnej trati Bratislava – Žilina a týmto krajom stúpa odbočná trať na Myjavu a k českej hranici. Autom je to krátka odbočka na západ z cesty považskou dolinou; cestičky na kopanice sú úzke a strmé.
