You start in Považské Podhradie, now a borough on the edge of Považská Bystrica, and the name tells you exactly what it is: the place under the castle. Leave the car down in the village, pick up the marked trail, and the climb is short but genuinely steep — roughly half an hour of proper uphill through the trees, with the walls appearing above you in fragments long before you reach them.Vyrážate v Považskom Podhradí, dnes mestskej časti na okraji Považskej Bystrice, a názov hovorí presne, o čo ide: miesto pod hradom. Auto necháte dolu v dedine, nájdete značkovaný chodník a výstup je krátky, ale poctivo strmý — zhruba polhodina naozajstného stúpania lesom, pričom múry sa nad vami objavujú v útržkoch dávno predtým, než k nim dôjdete.
Then the walking changes character completely. Most castles you arrive at; this one you arrive at one end of. The ridge is long and narrow, and the castle was built to fit it, so what you get is a sequence rather than a plan — a gate, a stretch of curtain wall, a courtyard, another gate, another courtyard, the ground rising and falling under you the whole way. Allow real time for this. Half an hour gets you to the castle; it does not get you through it.Potom sa chôdza úplne zmení. K väčšine hradov jednoducho prídete; k tomuto prídete na jeden koniec. The views come free with the walking, and they change as you move along the crest. Below you is Považská Bystrica and the Váh valley, the river and the road and the railway all threaded together in the same narrow floor. Eastward the limestone opens into the Manínska tiesňava, the Manín gorge, with the Súľov rocks beyond it; on the other horizons stand the long ridges of the Javorníky and the Strážovské vrchy. It is a proper Považie panorama, and you get it in instalments the whole length of the castle.Výhľady dostávate k chôdzi zadarmo a menia sa, ako postupujete po hrebeni.
