Žilina is one of Slovakia's great railway junctions: from ŽST Žilina the main lines run west along the Váh toward Bratislava, east through the Strečno gorge toward Vrútky and Košice, and north up the Kysuca valley to Čadca and on into Czechia and Poland, while a local branch climbs beside the Rajčanka to Rajec. The city itself runs on trolleybuses — in service since 1994 — linking the centre at Mariánske námestie with the big estates of Vlčince, Solinky and Hájik, while buses cross the Váh to Budatín and its castle at the confluence and reach Bánová and Trnové.
