Veľký Šariš has been a town since 28 January 1299, when Andrew III granted its settlers the rights of a free royal town in exchange for one fixed yearly payment to the crown, and it has kept its own centre and its own name even with Prešov six kilometres down the road. Its calendar is a small town's: market days, a summer town celebration, school and club events at the cultural centre, church feasts. The town's own listings are the reliable source, because a page like this would be out of date within a season.Veľký Šariš je mestom od 28. januára 1299, keď Ondrej III. udelil jeho obyvateľom práva slobodného kráľovského mesta výmenou za jednu pevnú ročnú platbu korune, a vlastné centrum i vlastné meno si udržal aj napriek Prešovu šesť kilometrov po ceste. The fixture that belongs to nowhere else is the hill. The castle walls are being put back together by volunteers, summer by summer and by hand - the largest castle site in the country consolidated at the pace of a working holiday - and the climb up through the forest takes under an hour from the town. The asphalt cycle path that runs some ten kilometres along the Torysa from Prešov and ends under the castle hill has made that climb a day out for the city as well.Jediné, čo nemá inde obdobu, je kopec. The town keeps a cultural centre with a hall, a library, a school of art for children, and the clubs and choirs a place of this size supports; we do not name them individually, because programmes and premises change faster than a page like this does. What Veľký Šariš does not pretend is that it competes with its neighbour. The theatres, the galleries and the regional museum are in Prešov, a few minutes away by train, and most people here treat them as their own.Mesto si drží kultúrny dom so sálou, knižnicu, základnú umeleckú školu a spolky i zbory, aké obec tejto veľkosti unesie; nemenujeme ich jednotlivo, lebo programy a priestory sa menia rýchlejšie než takáto stránka. Veľký Šariš však nepredstiera, že súperí so susedom. Divadlá, galérie a krajské múzeum sú v Prešove, pár minút vlakom, a väčšina ľudí ich tu berie za svoje.
The town's own cultural asset is the ruin, and it is unstaffed. There is no ticket desk on the hill, no roof and no shelter: what waits at the top is an enormous open circuit of walls, some of it standing high, much of it grassed-over footings, with the Šariš basin spread out below. Go up equipped for a hill walk rather than for a museum visit, and take the weather seriously - the summit is exposed and there is nowhere to sit it out.Vlastným kultúrnym majetkom mesta je zrúcanina a nikto ju neobsluhuje. Na kopci niet pokladne, strechy ani prístrešia: hore čaká obrovský otvorený okruh múrov, miestami vysoko stojacich, väčšinou zatrávnených základov, a pod ním rozložená Šarišská kotlina. Vystupujte vybavení na horskú turistiku, nie na návštevu múzea, a počasie berte vážne - vrchol je otvorený a nie je kde ho prečkať.
The parish church of St James goes back, under its later alterations, to about the middle of the thirteenth century - the same generation that raised the castle on the volcanic hill behind the town. The order matters and is usually told backwards: the castle did not grow out of the town. The town grew into the castle's shadow and stayed there for four hundred years, supplying, feeding and carting for a fortress that was also the seat of Šariš county.Farský kostol svätého Jakuba siaha pod neskoršími úpravami do polovice 13. storočia - do tej istej generácie, ktorá postavila hrad na sopečnom kopci za mestom. That ended in 1687, when fire reached the castle's powder store and the explosion wrecked it. Nobody rebuilt it, the county administration moved down the valley to Prešov, and almost everything about the modern town follows from that one decision. What the town has at ground level is modest and honest: a square, the church, the river, and along the western edge a brewery whose buildings have defined that side of the town since the 1960s.Skončilo sa to v roku 1687, keď oheň zasiahol hradnú prachárňu a výbuch hrad zničil. Nikto ho neobnovil, stoličná správa sa presťahovala dolu dolinou do Prešova a takmer všetko na dnešnom meste vyplýva z tohto jediného rozhodnutia. To, čo má mesto na úrovni zeme, je skromné a poctivé: námestie, kostol, rieka a na západnom okraji pivovar, ktorého budovy určujú túto stranu mesta od šesťdesiatych rokov.
Šariš, the name of the whole historic county, comes from this hill - and since 1967 it has also been on beer bottles in every shop in Slovakia. The brewery was founded here in 1964 and brewed its first batch on 26 May 1967, on the flat ground beside the Torysa, and it grew into the largest brewing plant in the country. A town of a few thousand people ended up with an industry of national scale at the end of its street.Šariš, meno celej historickej stolice, pochádza z tohto kopca - a od roku 1967 je aj na fľašiach piva v každom obchode na Slovensku. Pivovar tu založili v roku 1964 a prvú várku uvaril 26. mája 1967 na rovine pri Toryse; vyrástol na najväčší pivovarnícky závod v krajine. Mesto s pár tisíckami obyvateľov tak dostalo na koniec ulice priemysel celoštátneho rozmeru.
It has changed hands since: bought by SABMiller in 1997, merged with the Topvar brewery of Topoľčany on 1 January 2007 with production later concentrated here, and trading today as Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko under the Japanese Asahi group. The plant is a working factory and not an attraction, and the arrangement cuts both ways for a small town - the jobs are real, and the decisions about them are made in another country.Odvtedy zmenil majiteľov: v roku 1997 ho kúpil SABMiller, 1. januára 2007 sa spojil s topoľčianskym pivovarom Topvar a výroba sa neskôr sústredila sem, a dnes obchoduje ako Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko pod japonskou skupinou Asahi. Závod je pracujúcou továrňou, nie atrakciou, a pre malé mesto to má dve strany - pracovné miesta sú skutočné a rozhoduje sa o nich v inej krajine.
