A marked trail leaves the village and climbs the ridge through forest — around half an hour, steady rather than steep, and shaded almost the whole way. That shade is the character of the walk: unlike the bare volcanic cones further south, you get no view at all until you arrive, and then the ruin appears among the trees rather than above them. Walls run along the crest, a gate passage survives, bastion stumps stand where the outer defences were, and grassed banks mark the wards between them. Take the time to walk the whole length rather than stopping at the first standing wall — the size of the place is the point.
