Up Through the Beech WoodHore cez bučinu
The climb begins at the foot of the hill on the northern edge of Stará Ľubovňa and takes twenty minutes at an unhurried pace — a made-up path through beech wood, steady rather than steep, with the walls appearing and disappearing above you through the canopy. Cars stop at the bottom; the last stretch is on foot for everyone.Výstup sa začína na úpätí kopca na severnom okraji Starej Ľubovne a pri pokojnom tempe trvá dvadsať minút — upravený chodník bučinou, skôr rovnomerný než strmý, pričom hradby sa nad vami spomedzi korún raz objavia a raz zmiznú. You enter through the outer defences on the south side, where the ground is broadest and the artillery bastions the Lubomirskis added still swell out from the curtain wall in blunt semicircles. Beyond the gate the ground narrows into an irregular courtyard, and the castle sorts itself into its layers: the oldest, highest core with its round Gothic tower; the Renaissance ranges wrapped around it; and the Baroque palace with its regular window rows, the newest and most domestic-looking thing here.Do hradu sa vchádza cez vonkajšie opevnenie na južnej strane, kde je terén najširší a delové bastióny, ktoré pridali Lubomirskí, dodnes vystupujú z hradby v tupých polkruhoch. Restoration here has been long and patient, and it shows: this is not a bare ruin you wander at will, nor a fully rebuilt château. Some rooms are furnished and interpreted, some are consolidated shells, and the terraces between them open north over the Poprad, west toward the long wall of the Tatras on a clear day, and down onto the shingled roofs of the open-air museum in the meadow below.Obnova tu bola dlhá a trpezlivá a je to vidieť: nie je to holá zrúcanina, po ktorej sa voľne túlate, ani úplne prestavaný zámok. Niektoré miestnosti sú zariadené a sprístupnené s výkladom, iné sú zakonzervované múry, a terasy medzi nimi sa otvárajú na sever nad Poprad, za jasného dňa na západ k dlhej stene Tatier a dolu na šindľové strechy skanzenu na lúke pod hradom.
